An in vehicle computer based system for operating the vehicle in at least one of an autonomous and a semi-autonomous mode relies on detection of a restricted lane, a restricted zone, a construction zone, an accident area, an incline, a hazardous road surface, a roadside marker (160 see fig 2) and/or a virtual marker which is based on received GPS data. The computer determines at least one autonomous action based on the detected condition 315 or marker (160) and/or transitions the vehicle to manual control 335. Autonomous actions include at least one of speed alteration, steering control, lighting control and controlling a distance of the vehicle from an object. Markers (160) can be active or passive such as a road sign and may be detectable by RF means, camera or LIDAR. The method of using markers (160) is aimed at improving on the limitations of prior art systems with their reliance on sensing of surrounding conditions
