There is provided an electric marine propulsion system having a variable relationship between the speeds of two contra-rotating and coincident propellers Here, by measuring the thrust applied from the propellers to the hull, the relationship between the speeds of the two propellers can be controlled and optimised to improve the efficiency of the marine propulsion system. Thus, the electric marine propulsion system comprises a first electric motor connected to a first (or primary) drive shaft and a second electric motor connected to a second (or secondary) drive shaft. Each primary and secondary drive shaft includes an associated propeller. Thrust from the primary and secondary drive shafts are transferred to the boat through a force sensor. The force sensor comprises an output signal for connection to a control means. The control means being configured to control the output rotational speed of the first motor and to control the output rotational speed of the second motor. Wherein the control means is configured to vary the relationship between the output speeds of the first and second motors.
