An active method of preventing a ship from colliding with bridge piers comprises defining warning areas 02,03 and an intervention area 9 relative to a bridge 81, its supporting piers 82 and a channel thereunder. A water flow intervention system 10 is installed in the intervention area. A detector on the bridge detects the track of a ship travelling near the bridge. A judgement is made whether the ship yaws or not. If so, and the ship enters the warning area, the water flow intervention system is started to change water flow conditions in the intervention area so that the bow of the ship is pushed aside and forced to avoid the piers. The water flow intervention system comprises a floating platform (1,Figs.2,5) with a controller 2, high-energy water jet generator 3 and pipes 4. In deep water, the platform is fixed using anchored cables (63,64,Figs.3-4). In shallow water, it slides on guide columns (11,Figs.5-6) embedded in rock in the riverbed.
