A manually operated rail grinder assembly for a railway rail 200, comprising first 110 and second 120 handles, a grinder 130, at least one rail engaging element 162, 164 configured to couple the rail grinder assembly to the railway rail, and a first linkage 150 connecting the first and second handles to the grinder and the rail engaging element. The first linkage being configured such that relative movement of the first and second handles causes the grinder to move between first and second positions relative to the first handle that permits grinding of a top of the railway rail or a side of the railway rail respectively. The first linkage can be a four-bar linkage comprising sequentially and pivotally connected first, second, third and fourth links. The first linkage can be configured such that the first and second handles have first and second relative positions wherein they are substantially adjacent each other or are spaced apart respectively. The assembly can comprise a pair of first linkages. The assembly can comprise a deployable stand which supports the rail grinder assembly in a particular position when deployed.
