A fuel injector (1, Fig 1), for direct injection of gaseous fuel, extends along an axis A from a proximal P to a distal D side and comprises an injector body (2, Fig 1), a fuel passage 4 and a distally disposed end portion (2.1, Fig 1) defining a valve seat (3, Fig 1), extending around an outlet opening 5. An outward opening pintle 10 in the injector body is axially movable between a seat engaging proximal pintle position, to close the outlet opening, and a distal pintle position, to release the outlet opening. To reduce closing impact the valve seat comprises a first 3.1, second 3.2 and third 3.3 seat portions. The second portion extends distally between the first and the third seat portions is less inclined with respect to the injector axis than the first and third seat portions. The pintle comprises a first pintle portion 10.4 adjacent to the first seat portion in the proximal pintle position and a second pintle portion 10.5, radially outside of the first pintle portion, adjacent to the second seat portion in the proximal pintle position and disposed distally offset in the distal pintle position. Hydrogen engine use is intended.
