A fuel injector 1 for direct injection of gaseous fuel (such as hydrogen), comprising: an injector body 2, an outward opening pintle 10, an armature element 15 for engaging the pintle and being axially movable corresponding to the pintle position, and a solenoid actuator 12 to initiate a movement of the armature. At least one damper space 25, 26 is defined between the armature and the injector body so that a volume of the damper space is varied by movement of the armature, wherein in the region around the damper space, a gap width between the armature element and the injector body, is less than 15 μm, and also comprising a gas-exchange path 27 to which the damper space is connected, the gas-exchange path being open for gas exchange at any position of the armature. The invention provides reliable means for preventing impact damage in an injector for gaseous fuel.
