A method for detecting one or more vehicles using curved mirrors located at road intersections. When a first vehicle 301 reaches a predefined location from a predefined direction at night-time an image of the forward view of the vehicle is received by a detection system (101, figure 2) in the vehicle. The detection system identifies regions of interest (ROIs) indicating the location of one or more curved mirrors based on pre-stored data (211, figure 2) and identifies the presence of light in the ROIs. The reflected light may be used to detect vehicle(s) approaching the road intersection. The pre-stored data may comprise information relating to the location and direction of travel of a vehicle when capturing an image containing one or more mirrors and the position of those mirrors in the captured image. Characteristics of the reflected light may be monitored (e.g. intensity or area of the ROI illuminated) of the light the driver of the first vehicle may be alerted or the first vehicle’s brakes may be automatically triggered. The pre-stored data may be captured during the daytime. The detection system may comprise a memory, a processor, and an image capturing unit.
