Determining whether a freeze condition of the rubber seal is present, such as temperature below a threshold, wherein the freeze condition is present when the rubber seal is at least partially frozen onto a door frame, determining whether a door lock condition of the vehicle door is present, wherein the door lock condition is present when the vehicle door is closed and locked, determining whether a door unlock request is present, and, when the freeze condition is present and the door lock condition is present and the door unlock request is present, electrically actuating the vehicle door such that the rubber seal is at least partially squeezed to break any ice crystals. The freeze condition may be a temperature below a threshold over a period of time; the squeezing action may be repeated under severe freezing. A vehicle door closing aid, soft close, assisting final closing may be used to over-compress the seal.
