The method involves dividing travel into segments, where each segment is defined between two successive breakpoints. Distance and average speed of the segments are determined based on measured instant speed. Optimal speed of the travel is determined as an energy indicator. The optimal speed is calculated for each segment by an optimization algorithm that determines speed minimizing energy consumption of a vehicle, where calculation of the optimal speed is constrained by instant speed at the breakpoints, the distance and the average speed of the segment. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling a vehicle (2) a computer program product having a set of instructions for determining an energy indicator for displacement of a vehicle.
