The method involves selecting an idling mode for operation of a turbomotor (3) during a selection phase. The idling mode of operation is implemented during a regulation phase, where the idling operation mode is implemented according to hierarchical and operational conditions either through a regulation mode for regulating a rotational speed of a gas generator (4) of the turbomotor, or through another regulation mode for regulating a rotational speed of a free turbine (7) of the turbomotor. The conditions are prioritized according to the needs defined by an operator of an aircraft (1). The hierarchical and operational conditions are selected from one of generation of hot air from the turbomotor to heat an aircraft according to external conditions, generation of electrical energy from the gas generator for electrical energy supply to the aircraft, minimization of sound levels, and minimization of fuel consumption. An independent claim is also included for a device for automatic regulation of a group of engines of an aircraft.
