The invention describes a braking mechanism (1) for rail vehicles with variable-gauge axles, having a suspension rod (9) with an upper end rotatably connected to a reaction rod (5) and a lower end connected via a double joint (13) to a shoe holder (7). Furthermore, either the rotating connection between the suspension rod (9) and the reaction rod (5) or the rotating connection between the suspension rod (9) and the shoe holder (7) comprises an elongate hole (10) that allows the end of the suspension rod (9) connected to said elongate hole (10) to move up or down when the shoe holder (7) moves along the stub axle (4).
