During propulsion of a rail vehicle (100), a respective adhesion parameter (µm1, µm2, µm3, µm4, µmi, µmn) is repeatedly determined, which respective adhesion parameter reflects a friction coefficient (µe) between each wheel (101, 102, 103, 104, 10i, 10n) of the rail vehicle (100) and a rail (191) upon which the wheel travels. Based on the respective adhesion parameter and an estimated load (L1, L2, L3, L4, Li, Ln) on each of the wheels, a respective largest brake load possible to apply ([BLi]) on each of the wheels without exceeding a threshold amount of sliding between the wheel and the rail (191) is determined. For each of the wheels, a latest determined largest brake load possible to apply is stored in a memory (145). In response to receiving a brake command (B), the latest determined largest brake load possible for each of the wheels is obtained from the memory (145), and via a set of electrically operated brake units, a respective brake force is caused to be applied to each of the wheels, which respective brake force is based on the received brake command (B) and the latest determined largest brake load possible to apply ([BLi]) on each of the wheels (101, 102, 103, 104, 10i, 10n).
