In a train control system, an onboard control device includes an onboard control portion. The onboard control portion transmits the current position of a train to a ground control device and receives, from the ground control device, a travelable route for the train based on the current position and a travel-permitting position indicating a position enabling the train to travel within the travelable route. The onboard control portion controls the train to maintain a speed lower than or equal to a predetermined limit based on an operation pattern indicating a control pattern of the train referring to the travel-permitting position. The ground control device includes a ground control portion that calculates a travelable route and a travel-permitting position based on the current position received from the onboard control device and transmits the calculated travelable route and travel-permitting position to the onboard control device. The onboard control portion calculates a failure rate, namely, a ratio of failed brake devices to the brake devices mounted on the train, and controls the train to maintain a speed lower than or equal to an abnormal-state speed limit, namely, a speed calculated based on the failure rate and a normal-state speed limit as a speed limit for the train when all the brake devices are normal.
