A vertically adjustable cargo deck for a ro-ro ship (1) is designed in the form of a suspended deck (4) with a cargo-carrying platform (40) for ro-ro cargo. The suspension means (5) comprises a plurality of suspension cables (51) which are fixed to the platform (40), and a lifting device (6) acts on the suspension cables (51) in order to lift and lower the platform (40) from a stowed position (46) into a loading position (47). According to the invention, the lifting device (6) comprises a plurality of decentralized drive units (61). A dedicated drive unit (51) is provided for each suspension cable (51), and a control unit (7) monitors the drive units (61) for a coordinated actuation and outputs a deviation signal (73) if a threshold is exceeded. Each of the plurality of decentralized drive units can be designed to be smaller than a conventional central drive unit, thus decreasing the required installation height. A plurality of decentralized drive units instead of one large heavy central drive unit reduces the static load, in particular the bending stress, of the suspended deck. The suspended deck can be constructed so as to have a lighter weight and save space while maintaining the same bearing load. In this manner, a greater usable loading height is achieved.
