A method for controlling a drive system of a motor vehicle having a drive motor (10), a hydrodynamic torque converter (20), which is connected to the drive motor, and an automatic transmission (30) which is connected between the torque converter and a drive shaft of the motor vehicle, wherein a state of the torque converter between a closed state, in which the force of the drive motor is transmitted by a friction lock within the torque converter to an input shaft of the automatic transmission, and an open state, in which the force of the drive motor is transmitted by hydrodynamic force transmission within the torque converter to the input shaft of the automatic transmission, comprises the following steps: • a) detecting a rotational speed of the drive motor, • b) detecting a rotational speed of the input shaft of the automatic transmission, • c) determining whether the rotational speed of the drive motor has or has not decreased continuously within a predetermined preceding period of time, and • d) outputting a control signal to the drive motor in order to adjust the rotational speed of the drive motor such that it is identical to or greater than the rotational speed of the input shaft of the automatic transmission when the torque converter is in the open state and the rotational speed of the drive motor has decreased continuously within the predetermined preceding period of time.
