The invention relates to a method and a system for the battery management of an on-board electrical system battery (40) of a hybrid motor vehicle (10), comprising an internal combustion engine (20) and at least one electric machine (30), and also of an exhaust gas aftertreatment device (21) comprising at least one electrically heatable catalytic converter (22), wherein the electric machine (30) can be operated in a generator mode for charging the on-board electrical system battery (40). The current charging level (SOC_curr) of the on-board electrical system battery (40) is continuously monitored and held at a required charging level (SOC_req) by means of the electric machine (30) in such a way that electrical heating of the catalytic converter (22) in a manner fed by the on-board electrical system battery (40) at an activation temperature is reliably ensured in the case of subsequent cold-starting of the internal combustion engine (20). Here, the required charging level (SOC_req) of the on-board electrical system battery (40) is continuously determined during operation, depending on the state of ageing (SOH_Cat, SOH_Bat) of the catalytic converter (22) and on-board electrical system battery (40) and the ambient temperature (T_exp) expected during the subsequent cold-starting.
