The invention relates to a method for automatically actuating a direction indicator (1) of an ego vehicle (2), wherein a computing unit actuates the direction indicator (1) depending on information obtained from the processing of sensor data and from a comparison of a location of the ego vehicle to a digital road map, the computing unit is able to detect a situation in which the ego vehicle (2) is approaching a traffic junction (3) with a priority road that turns off and to automatically activate the direction indicator (1) when the traffic junction (3) is approached. The method according to the invention is characterised in that when the computing unit detects that the ego vehicle (2) is located on a priority route, the computing unit checks the sensor data to establish whether, in the event that a priority road turns off, another vehicle (4) can be detected in a street (L, R, V) that leads into the traffic junction (3) from the left, right or ahead from the perspective of the ego vehicle (2), as a result of which the computing unit actuates the direction indicator (1) in order to, depending on the type of priority road that turns off and a detected other vehicle (4): - activate the direction indicator (1) when the computing unit detects no other vehicle (4) in the respective street (L, R, V); - prevent an activation of the direction indicator (1) when the computing unit detects at least one other vehicle (4) in the respective street (L, R, V).
