A method for operating a system (1) that has a plurality of charging stations (10), a number of apparatuses (20), the respective apparatus (20) being associated with one or more of the charging stations (10), and a switching matrix for providing a plurality of switching states, comprising: charging electric vehicles (2, 3) by means of charging stations (10) in a specific period in which a number of the charging stations (10) are vacant, determining a requirement of a further electric vehicle (2, 3) to couple to a charging station (10), ascertaining a freely available charging power of the system for charging the further electric vehicle (2, 3), negotiating a charging plan with the further electric vehicle (2, 3), starting the charging of the further electric vehicle (2, 3) by means of the negotiated charging plan, negotiating new charging plans with a number of the electric vehicles (2, 3) comprising the further electric vehicle (2, 3) that comprise at least one changeover by means of one of the switching matrices, and charging the electric vehicles (2, 3) by means of the negotiated new charging plans.
