A method for operating a charging station for charging and/or discharging an energy store of an electric vehicle with electrical energy is proposed. The charging station (1) is operable in a plurality of modes comprising a charging mode for charging and/or discharging an electric vehicle (3), a pairing mode for pairing with the electric vehicle (3) preceding the charging mode, and a standby mode preceding the pairing mode. The method comprises the following steps: receiving (S41) predetermined authorization information by way of the receiving unit (120), subsequently switching (S42) the charging station (1) to the standby mode, the charging station (1) being switched to the standby mode exclusively upon the predetermined authorization information being received, and subsequently switching (S43) the charging station (1) from the standby mode to the pairing mode for pairing with the electric vehicle (3).
