The present invention relates to a method for operating an electromechanical steering system (1) comprising: a steering shaft (2) by means of which a steering command can be specified by means of a steering handle (3); and a steering actuator (4). A control signal for controlling the steering actuator (4) is generated in order to convert a steering command by means of the steering actuator (4) into a steering movement of steerable wheels (5) of a motor vehicle, a mechanical change in shape in the steering system (1) being determined and the generated control signal being adapted depending on the determined mechanical change in shape to form a corrected control signal (ST). The invention also relates to a steering system (1) designed to carry out the method.
