The invention relates to a method for heating an electrically heatable catalyst (46, 105), the method comprising the following steps: electrically heating the electrically heatable catalyst (46, 105) and increasing the rotational speed of an internal combustion engine (10), the steps of the method being carried out during idle operation of the internal combustion engine (10) and the rotational speed being increased to at least 1000 min-1. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle configured to carry out the method. By combining the electric heating of the catalyst with the speed increase of the engine according to the present invention, untreated emissions have been effectively reduced in a short time after the start of driving.
