Method for controlling a motor vehicle powertrain comprising at least two driving power sources and at least one drive wheel, comprising the following steps: - determining maximum and minimum wheel torque tolerances in relation to predefined rules, - determining a wheel torque setpoint according to a wheel torque request from the driver or from at least one driving assistance system, - determining a distribution of the wheel torque setpoint between the driving power sources, - checking that the sum of the wheel torque setpoints of the driving power sources is within the tolerances previously determined in relation to the wheel torque request from the driver, - checking, for each driving power source, that the torque actually delivered to the wheel is within the tolerances previously determined in relation to the torque setpoint for the driving power source, - checking that the sum of the torques actually delivered to the wheel from each driving power source is also within the tolerances previously determined in relation to the torque request from the driver, - if at least one of the checks is not validated, issuing a fault signal.
