The coaxiality of a linear motion shaft in which a first shaft portion and a second shaft portion are connected by friction welding is improved with respect to a portion having a first input section and a portion having a second input section. By rotationally driving at least one of a first gripping tool 57 and a second gripping tool 58 in a state where a gripped section 56 for centering provided in a screw shaft portion 29 which is the first shaft portion is gripped by the first gripping tool 57 for centering, as well as where a rack shaft portion 28 which is the second shaft portion is gripped by the second gripping tool 58 for centering, end portions in the axial direction of the rack shaft portion 28 and the screw shaft portion 29 are abutted while relatively rotating the screw shaft portion 29 and the rack shaft portion 28 to connect the rack shaft portion 28 and the screw shaft portion 29 by friction welding.
