A linear motion shaft, in which a first shaft and a second shaft are coupled by friction welding, has improved coaxiality between a section having a first input part and a section having a second input part. A screw shaft (29), which is the first shaft, is provided with a gripping part (56) for centering. While the gripping part (56) of the screw shaft (29) is gripped by a first gripping tool (57) for centering, and a rack shaft (28), which is the second shaft, is gripped by a second gripping tool (58) for centering, the first gripping tool (57) and/or the second gripping tool (58) is rotationally driven. This action causes an axial direction end of the rack shaft (28) and an axial direction end of the screw shaft (29) to abut each other while the screw shaft (29) and the rack shaft (28) are rotated relative to each other, and as a result the rack shaft (28) and the screw shaft (29) are coupled by friction welding.
