Apparatus for use by a controller configured to control an operation of an electromagnetic brake system using at least one brake coil, the apparatus comprising means configured to obtain a resistance value of the at least one brake coil, means configured to detect an electric current flowing through the at least one brake coil, means configured to calculate a transient overload energy for the at least one brake coil, the transient overload energy representing an amount of energy dissipating in excess of a continuous limit amount of energy which the at least one brake coil is able to dissipate without exceeding a preset temperature, means configured to determine whether the transient overload energy being calculated is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold, and means configured to, in case it is determined that the transient overload energy being calculated is equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold, trigger an overheat protection function for reducing the temperature of the at least one brake coil.
