An apparatus for use by a controller configured to control operation of an electromagnetic brake system using at least one brake coil. The apparatus includes a means configured to obtain a resistance value of the at least one brake coil, a means configured to detect a current flowing through the at least one brake coil, a means configured to calculate a transient overload energy of the at least one brake coil, a means configured to determine whether the transient overload energy being calculated is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold value, the transient overload energy representing an amount of energy dissipated exceeding a continuous limit amount of energy capable of being dissipated by the at least one brake coil under a condition of not exceeding a preset temperature, a means configured to determine whether the transient overload energy being calculated is equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold value; and means configured to trigger an overheat protection function to reduce the temperature of the at least one brake coil if it is determined that the transient overload energy being calculated is equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold.
