A method for operating an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) based on a payload sensing comprises determining the centre of gravity of the payload on a platform of the AMR, determining which area of a plurality of predefined areas of the platform the payload CoG is positioned in, and determining one or more drive parameters for the AMR based on the determined area of the platform on which the payload CoG is positioned, the one or more drive parameters limiting the transport speed of the AMR while the payload is being carried thereon.
