The invention relates to a method and to a sensor system (100) for optically determining a distance (O) between the sensor system (100), which comprises a light receiver (120) and an objective (110), and an object (395) located in a scene (490). The method comprises (a) producing a sharp first image of the object (395) on the light receiver (120) at a first focus setting of the objective, a first depth-of-field range (T2) being associated with the first focus setting; (b) producing a sharp second image of the object on the light receiver at a second focus setting, a second depth-of-field range (T3) being associated with the second focus setting, the second depth-of-field range and the first depth-of-field range being different and the two depth-of-field ranges spatially overlapping in an overlapping range (L23); (c) calculating, on the basis of the first focus setting and the second focus setting, a first spacing (U1) between the sensor system and a near end of the overlapping range (L23) and a second spacing (U2) between the sensor system and a far end of the overlapping range (L23); and (d) determining the distance on the basis of the first spacing and the second spacing, the distance (O) lying between the two spacings. The invention further relates to a method for optically determining a plurality of distances, to a mobile device having a sensor system of this type, and to a plurality of uses for a sensor system of this type.
