A control unit (51) for a vehicle battery controller including a sensor (52) configured to acquire information on a subordinate battery (12) configured to back up a main battery (11) during autonomous driving is configured to control charging and discharging of the subordinate battery (12) based on the information acquired by the sensor (52). The control unit (51) permits the autonomous driving when determination is made, through first battery control, that the subordinate battery (12) can output backup power. The control unit (51) determines whether the subordinate battery (12) can output the backup power (99) by executing second battery control having higher accuracy than that of the first battery control.
