A controller (2) of an electric drive (1) continuously detects an operating parameter (BP) of the electric drive (1) using sensors or derives the operating parameter (BP) from variables (n, T, T') detected using sensors. The controller continuously checks whether the operating parameter (BP), which starts with values below a trigger value (G2), has reached the trigger value (G2). When the operating parameter (BP) reaches the trigger value (G2), the controller (2) sets a maximally permissible relative maximum current (ImaxR) to equal a current (I) supplied to the electric machine (4) by the semiconductor switch device (3) at this point in time. For operating parameter (BP) values between the trigger value (G2) and a threshold (G3) above the trigger value (G2), the controller (2) ascertains a current threshold curve (K) which, from the trigger value (G2) to the threshold (G3) of the operating parameter (BP), falls strictly in a monotonous manner from the relative maximum current (ImaxR) to a minimum current (Imin). During the further operation of the electric drive (1), the controller (2) limits the current (I) supplied to the electric machine (4) by the semiconductor switch device (3) according to the ascertained current threshold curve (K) for operating parameter (BP) values between the trigger value (G2) and the threshold (G3).
