The invention relates to a method for detecting and identifying a driving maneuver of a traffic participant using movement data which describes the movement of the traffic participant. The driving maneuver is assigned a driving maneuver class as part of the identification process. The movement data comprises radar data which is detected using at least one radar sensor (2) of a motor vehicle (1) and in which static and dynamic objects in the surroundings of the traffic participant are differentiated. Each driving maneuver class is assigned at least one comparison data structure which characterizes driving maneuvers of the driving maneuver class and which contains movement patterns over time with respect to at least one object, and the detection and identification processes are carried out by correlating some of the movement data, said data corresponding to the movement patterns, to the movement patterns of the at least one comparison data structure.
