The invention relates to a method for controlling an electropneumatic parking brake device (1) of a vehicle (2) while driving as an auxiliary brake, wherein the parking brake device (1) has an electronic parking brake control unit (18) and spring brake cylinders (28) which are actuated by compressed air on at least one axle (14). The invention is characterized in that the axle load on at least one axle (14) by way of spring brake cylinders (28) which are actuated by compressed air is determined and then, during the use of the parking brake device (1) while driving as an auxiliary brake, the auxiliary brake pressure for the spring brake cylinders (28) which are actuated by compressed air on the axle (14) is controlled or regulated by way of the electronic parking brake control unit (18) in a manner which is dependent on the axle load which prevails on the axle (14).
