The invention relates to a method for preventing the evaporation of fuel in a fuel tank of a motor vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine, wherein a fluid layer covers the free surface of the fuel in the fuel tank that is not directly in contact with a wall of the fuel tank. This fluid is essentially immiscible with common fuels, has a density of less than 750 grams/litre and a boiling point above 80° Celsius and is combustible in an environmentally friendly manner. The occurrence of a significant overpressure in the fuel tank is occasionally monitored at least by means of a pressure sensor in the fuel tank, and in such a case, a user of the motor vehicle is notified that new fluid of this type is to be introduced into the fuel. In addition, the fluid can be composed of nanoparticles.
