A motor vehicle system monitors the position of a first vehicle 100 with respect to its current lane; detects the existence of a collision hazard (e.g. second vehicle 100) in an adjacent second lane; and detects an intention of the driver of the first vehicle to change lane into the second lane. If both the driver intention and the collision hazard are detected, the system provides feedback to the driver. Thus a force (e.g. counter-torque or reduction in torque assist) may be applied to the steering wheel. The magnitude or duration of the warning torque may depend on the driver-applied steering or steering wheel torque. It may guide the vehicle to the centre of the first lane, thus preventing lane-change. The drivers wish to change lane may be detected from activation of a turn indicator or steering inputs.
