The invention provides a fiber-reinforced composite material (10), comprising a bulk portion (12) comprising a bulk matrix with reinforcing fibers embedded therein, and a surface portion (14) comprising a plurality of laminated first layers (20) serving as "expanding layers", which expand and/or delaminate during fire impact. Preferably, the surface portion (14) further comprises a plurality of laminated second layers (22) different from the first layers (20) and serving as "barrier layers", wherein expanding layers (20) and barrier layers (22) can be arrangend in an alternating sequence (20-1, 22-1, 20-2, 22-2). The material (10) according to the invention shows an improved fire resistance in comparison to conventional fiber-reinforced composites.
