The parking assistance method involves detecting a region (41) of a vehicle (30) by an image sensor (31), where vehicle shadow tracks (40) are detected in captured images. The detected vehicle shadow tracks are used for determining a parking space, where the vehicle shadow tracks includes snow-free or dry surfaces. The parking space dimensions are determined based on the vehicle shadow tracks. A surrounding casing is determined in a vehicle shadow track. An independent claim is included for a parking assistance system.
