There are provided a fuel cell system 10 and a starting method therefore, which prevent a trouble when the system is started. The fuel cell system 10 includes: a fuel cell 12; a secondary battery 108 which is electrically connected with the fuel cell 12; and a cell temperature sensor 66 which detects a temperature of the fuel cell 12. Energy which is necessary for starting the fuel cell system 10 is calculated based on the temperature of the fuel cell 12 detected by the cell temperature sensor 66. The calculated value is used as a threshold for determining a start-up mode of the fuel cell system 10.
