A method for illuminating a seat (2) in a vehicle is proposed, comprising the steps: • a. sensing an occupancy state of the seat (2), • b. determining, on the basis of the sensed occupancy state, whether there is a risk of blinding by an interior lamp (10) for a user occupying the seat (2), • c. if there is a risk of blinding for the user, setting a parameter which indicates the risk of blinding for the seat (2), in a control unit (18) of the interior lamp (10), and • d. taking at least one measure to reduce the risk of blinding in dependence on the set parameter. Furthermore, a motor vehicle is proposed which is designed to detect whether a rear-facing child car seat (14) is in one or more seats (2), the motor vehicle comprising a control unit (18) which controls at least one interior lamp (10) in such a way that a blinding effect for a child in the rear-facing child car seat (14) by the interior lamp (10) is avoided if it was detected that such a rear-facing child car seat (14) is present.
