The invention relates to a vehicle control system for controlling automatic vehicle acceleration and braking. A method for controlling automatic vehicle acceleration and braking includes: detecting, by at least one vehicle object sensor of a host vehicle, a nearest (CIP) target vehicle within a path in front of the host vehicle; obtaining a path history of the CIP target vehicle, wherein the path history comprises a plurality of historical positions of the CIP target vehicle in a specified time interval; obtaining a path history of the vehicle, wherein the path history of the vehicle comprises a plurality of historical positions of the vehicle in a specified time interval; comparing the path history of the CIP target vehicle with the path history of the vehicle to determine a difference index; and in response to the difference index being less than the specified difference threshold, controlling automatic acceleration and braking of the host vehicle based at least in part on the tracked motion of the CIP target vehicle.
