An escalator system is provided and includes: a rail comprising a skirt having a brush; a moving step, the moving step being drivable to move along the rail in the conveying direction to form a step-apron interface between the end of the brush of the apron and a corresponding side of the moving step; and a pinch monitoring and detection system. The pinch monitoring and detection system includes a sensor and a processor. A sensor is disposed at the step-apron interface and is configured to sense an object present at the step-apron interface. The processor is configured to determine whether the sensor senses that an object is present at the step-apron interface for a predetermined time.
