Methods and systems are provided that include a sensor and a processor of a vehicle configured to draw a trailer. The sensor is configured to obtain sensor data relating to the surroundings of the trailer. A processor is coupled to the sensor and configured to at least facilitate: retrieving information about a profile of the trailer, the profile including a desired clearance of the trailer based on an extension of the trailer, the extension configured to retract when the trailer is moving and to fully extend when the trailer is parked and utilized; determining, based on the sensor data and the profile, whether there is any obstacle in the path of the trailer when the extension is fully extended; and taking an action according to the instructions provided by the processor when there is an obstacle in the path of the trailer.
