The invention relates to a method for controlling a handling crane (1), to which a gripping device (10) for an operator is fixed on a load-bearing member (9), in which a sensor system (18) ascertains position data of a component fixed to the load-bearing member (9) and a controller (11) is connected in a signal-transmitting manner to the sensor system (18), the sensor system (18) is configured to detect the position data of the crane (1) and is configured to specify a driving direction for at least one driving device of the crane (1), in particular a trolley driving device and/or a crane driving device generated by the controller (11) and used for control commands based on the position data detected by the sensor system (18). The aim of the invention is to increase efficiency and work efficiency during handling operations. The object is achieved in that at least one marking element having at least one predefined, in particular unique identification feature, is attached to the load-bearing member (9), preferably to the gripping device (10), and in order to ascertain the position data, the at least one marking element is detected by the sensor system (18), and analyzing the at least one predefined identification feature of the marker element that has been detected. The invention also relates to a loading crane (1) configured to carry out such a method.
