The invention relates to a method for decelerating a servomotor of a steering system, in particular for protection in service operating conditions, the steering device comprises a control unit for actuating the servomotor, monitoring electronics for monitoring the movement of the servomotor, and an energy store which is operatively connected to the control unit and to the monitoring electronics and is designed differently from the vehicle battery, a movement of the servomotor caused by an external force is monitored by means of monitoring electronics by evaluating a movement characteristic variable that is dependent on the movement of the servomotor, and a deceleration process is triggered in at least one operating state as a function of the movement characteristic variable, in which deceleration process the servomotor is decelerated by means of a control unit, and wherein the energy store is charged by the movement of the servomotor and, in at least one application, serves to supply energy to the control unit and the monitoring electronics.
