The invention relates to a method (100) for setting a setpoint distance (50) between a motor vehicle (10) and a preceding vehicle (20) running in front, comprising: activating (110) a distance control speed controller for setting the setpoint distance (50); ascertaining (120) distance information characterizing a distance between the motor vehicle (10) and the preceding vehicle (20); ascertaining (130) vehicle type information characterizing a vehicle type of the preceding vehicle (20); ascertaining (140) a correction distance on the basis of the distance information and the vehicle type information; and setting (150) the target distance (50) as a function of the corrected distance.
