The invention relates to a brake system (400) for a rail vehicle (1), comprising: a brake control device (480), which has a first brake control unit (486), which is designed to provide a brake function (334) and to output a force adjustment variable, a first actuator control unit (488), which is designed to provide a function for generating a friction brake force on the basis of the force adjustment variable and to output an actuation variable (494); and an actuator (482) having a second brake control unit (490), which is designed to provide a brake function and to output a force adjustment variable, a second actuator control unit (492), which is designed to provide a function for generating a friction brake force and to output an actuation variable on the basis of the force adjustment variable, and a brake force unit (458), which is designed to provide a function for generating a friction brake force and to output an actuation variable on the basis of the force adjustment variable, the brake device is designed to provide a function for generating a friction braking force based on an actuating variable; and a first braking path formed by a function acting between at least one control input of the braking system and generation of braking force; and a second braking path formed by a function acting between the at least one control input of the braking system and the generation of the braking force.
