A combined reactive-proactive controller and uses thereof are described herein. In a first mode of operation, such a controller may simultaneously depend on a priori information about a road surface in front of the vehicle acquired from a database and real-time information collected by one or more on-board sensors. Alternatively, in the second mode, such a controller may rely solely on real-time information collected by one or more in-vehicle sensors. Systems controlled by such controllers may include, but are not limited to, active suspension actuators.
