The present disclosure provides systems and methods for automatically applying braking and performing regenerative braking during downhill motion. The method may include determining states of an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal of the vehicle; when the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal are in the closed state, the set speed of the vehicle is set to be equal to the current speed of the vehicle; determining whether a value obtained by subtracting the set speed from the current speed is greater than a threshold speed of the vehicle; setting a target speed of the vehicle to be equal to a sum of the set speed and a threshold speed when a value obtained by subtracting the set speed from the current speed is greater than the threshold speed; regenerative braking is performed on a vehicle with a brake controller, with a disturbance observer (DOB) structure and a feedback controller to maintain a target speed.
