A seawater suction riser (100) is configured for sucking water from a body of water, the seawater suction riser (100) comprising a riser conduit (106), a riser head (104) configured for connection to a tank in a vessel, and a riser inlet (102) configured for sucking water. The riser head is disposed at a proximal end of the riser conduit, and the riser inlet is disposed at a distal end of the riser conduit. The riser inlet comprises a grid element (110) having openings that allows water to flow into the interior of the riser conduit while blocking ingress of objects floating in the flowing water. The grid element includes a connector configured to attach a ballast (108) to the grid element. The ballast is a plurality of ballast elements (120) distributed in the string. A string is connected to the connector at one end thereof. The ballast elements in the string are spaced apart from each other by an intermediate line.
