A system for controlling a host vehicle to follow a preceding vehicle without vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication includes a sensor disposed on the host vehicle and capturing host vehicle condition information and preceding vehicle condition information. The control modules disposed in the host vehicle each have a processor, a memory, and an input/output (I/O) port. The I/O port communicates with one or more sensors. The memory stores control logic, and the processor executes the control logic, including a preceding vehicle following (LVF) application. The first control logic receives a launch input from a vehicle occupant via a human machine interface (HMI) in communication with the I/O port. The second control logic performs feasibility analysis of the host vehicle condition and the preceding vehicle condition according to feasibility conditions. The third control logic selectively initiates preceding vehicle following. The fourth control logic continuously monitors the feasibility of preceding vehicle following, and the fifth control logic selectively disables the LVF application upon receipt of a release command.
