The embodiment of the invention provides a road congestion detection method and device, a vehicle is provided with a vehicle-mounted unit supporting V2V communication, the method comprises the steps that map information of a current road on which a current vehicle runs is acquired, and the map information comprises a plurality of areas; acquiring position information of one or more other vehicles through the vehicle-mounted unit, and establishing a corresponding relationship between the one or more other vehicles and the plurality of areas according to the position information; and determining the road congestion information of the current road according to the corresponding relation. According to the embodiment of the invention, the method achieves the detection of road congestion through the V2V communication, does not depend on navigation software, and improves the real-time performance and accuracy of congestion detection.
